Southland

Filmmakers love Southland.

Mark Twain described Milford Sound as the eighth wonder of the world, and this incredible fiord is one of several stunning locations within the Southland district. Sir Ridley Scott chose Milford Sound to star in ALIEN: COVENANT, and it also backdropped the opening scene of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT.

The area's main city Invercargill featured in THE WORLD'S FASTEST INDIAN, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins as Invercargill legend Bert Munro. Invercargill has a multi-faceted, timeless character that lends itself to a wide variety of period looks including US townscapes from the ‘50s to present day. It also hosts a thriving tertiary institution (Southland Institute of Technology) offering various screen production courses.

Message from the Mayor

The Invercargill City Council is a rock solid supporter of the film industry. We take every opportunity to cut through red tape at short notice when film makers want access to parks, rivers, beaches, roads or council owned farms and forests. Successful films such as the World’s Fastest Indian can be a catalyst for major events such as the Burt Munro Challenge. Tim Shadbolt - Invercargill City

Welcome to the Gore District, the hub of the south, where you get unique geographical features, a warm welcome, and a community willing and agile enough to provide support where needed. It’s what we call Rural City Living. Tracy Hicks - Gore District

From farm to forest and from the coast to the mountains, Southland has featured in several films and advertisements. We have the places, the people and the atmosphere and are ready to help you bring Southland to the world. Gary Tong - Southland District
